17 September - 30 October 2016 -  Opening night 6pm Friday 16 September 2016

Deep in the Ngannyatjarra Lands in the Gibson Desert, in an isolated community called Wanarn, is a 16-bed aged care home for Ngaanyatjarra people from the surrounding region, an area the size of Victoria. Wanarn is 1150 kms east of Kalgoorlie and 850 kms west of Alice Springs, yet it is home to a remarkable art making program that has nurtured some of the most important artists of the Western Desert in their old age, by allowing them to continue to paint their tjukurrpa (dreaming) stories through weekly art therapy visits.

Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre is pleased to present the first ever public exhibition dedicated to Wanarn paintings. Into The Mystic - Journeys with the artists of Wanarn brings together around 60 paintings by acclaimed artists like Carol Maayatja Golding and Tjapartji Bates along with lesser known but equally powerful artists. Their paintings range from the sublimely minimal to the gloriously poetic. Together they are a deeply affecting celebration of an unbroken connection to Country and the triumph of culture over mortality.

Thanks to Deborah Sims and Matt Dickson for curating this exhibition for the Arts Centre from their collection.

Exhibiting from 17 September to 30 October 2016. Opening night 6pm Friday, 16 September 2016 with refreshments courtesy of Hollydene Estate Wines, Hunter Belle Cheese and Pukara Estate.
