Opening 6.00pm 09 January 2015

Raised in the 1960's and 70's artist couple Peter and Susan O’Doherty share influences from pop art and culture, and a fascination with the depersonalised icons of Australian suburbia. Both relate their persistent enquiry of these icons to the impermanence of their respective upbringings, with families who moved from one temporary residence to another.

The artistic marriage of Susan and Peter O’Doherty comes to Muswellbrook with their exhibition Moving House

Inspired by the roaming childhoods experienced by both artists Susan and Peter present a nostalgic look at houses and the objects that filled them during the 1950’s, 60’s & 70’s. Paintings and assemblages will fill the School of Arts Gallery taking the viewer on a trip down memory lane back to the suburban and country homes of their youth. This is an exhibition about memory, identity and the transitory nature of modern life.

While the work of Susan and Peter O’Doherty presents the settings and tools for daily life, not a single person appears in their exhibition.

While Peter portrays soft-focus opaque facades, Susan presents hard-edged interior details; inverse visions. But despite these differences, there is much in common. Both exteriors and interiors are static. Both too are devoid of human presence even while it is suggested.
