31 July - 11 September 2016
From 403 entries across the three section of the 43rd Muswellbrook Art Prize - Painting, Works on Paper, and Ceramics, to 99 finalists as determined by the selection panel, the final adjudicator - Anne Ryan, Curator of Australia Prints, Drawing and Watercolours at the Art Gallery of NSW, chose three winners of the $60,000 prize. Young emerging artist Nick Ferguson won the $40,000 painting prize with his painterly and tonal portrait of the actor Bruce Spence entitled Swimming. The $10,000 prize for a work on paper was won by established midcareer artist John Bokor for his complex and accomplished charcoal and watercolour drawing on paper entitled Ness & Lizzie’s Lounge Room. While the $10,000 ceramic was awarded to Jane McKenzie for her work that saw a melding together of functional objects into a purely sculptural object entitled Assemblage.
Bokor, Ferguson & McKenzie showcases the recent work of the three acquisitive prize winners and speaks further about each of the works that have become a part of the Muswellbrook Shire Art Collection.
