With over ninety works drawn from major institutions and private collections, The Three O’s: Orban, Olsen & Ogburn, reassesses the creative paths of three unique artists.

This touring exhibition explores the legacy of Desiderius Orban and that of two of his students, John Ogburn and John Olsen. Both later taught at Orban’s studio before blazing their own trails in Australian Art.

...Do you take the scenic route when you go on a road trip? Or do you take the highway?

Focusing on the area of the Hunter Valley, Rebecca Rath takes us on the scenic route through many of the local towns within the valley.

Having painted over 150 small documentary style oil paintings, Rath's large installation will take you back to your childhood…. when a road trip meant the long route with many stops until your destination.

The recent sad passing of one of Australia’s greatest abstractionist artists is the impetus for this exhibition of paintings from the Max Watters Collection. John Peart was a much loved and admired painter and a long-time member of the Wedderburn artists’ community to south-west Sydney.

Muswellbrook Local Art Awards for 2013 is an annual event highlighting the depth and talent of the Upper Hunter Region’s extraordinary creativity. With prize money totalling $5,000.00 spread across five categories over 150 entries have arrived at the Arts Centre this week from artists based in Muswellbrook, Singleton and Upper Hunter Shires, making the task of this year’s judge Dr John Barnes, Director of Cessnock Regional Art Gallery, very difficult indeed.

Craft as Art: Australian ceramics from the collections 1971 - 2012

For the first time in the Arts Centre’s history all the ceramic artists represented in the Permanent Collections will be on display.

The School of Arts Gallery will feature a cornucopia of clay, from the exquisite insect vase of local Denman artist Nicola Purcell (from the Max Watters Collection) to the abstract coal sculpture of Sydney’s William Lungas (winner of the Muswellbrook Art Prize for Ceramics in 2009) and will include nationally well-known ceramic artists such as Greg Daly, Aleksander Danko, Lorraine Jenyns, Michael Keighery, Gudrun Klix, Janet Mansfield, Danie Mellor, Ray Taylor and Peter Tilley.

Exhibitions of miniature painting by local artists have been a regular feature on the Arts Centre exhibition programme for over two decades.

Now in its 16th iteration the ‘spirit of miniaturisation’ is alive and well with Miniatures XVI. The universal appeal for miniature art continues to be strong with the concept having been expanded to include not only painting but also embroidery, photography, sculpture and ceramics as well as all subject matters.

Jean Davies - Follow the Page

Jean Davies "Grey Day Riverside"

Jean Davies - Follow the Page will take you on a journey down the Pages River from its source West of Murrurundi to its junction with the Hunter River South of Segenhoe. Davies’s affinity with the Upper Hunter and, most importantly, the Pages River is clear in this series of watercolour, ink and pastel works.
