Workshop: Old Masters Painting Technique with Hanna Kay

Hanna Kay by Leslie Wand

10:00am-2:00pm Saturday 12 November 2016

Join Hanna Kay in the Old Masters Painting Technique workshop. Only $45 per participant.

This workshop is aimed at artists who have mastered basic drawing/painting techniques and who would like to explore other ways to develop their creativity. The workshop will focus on a technique used by Dutch Masters and early Renaissance painters. This painting method is based on the principle of applying layers of oil paint and egg tempera which allow light to pass through the layers. It allows colours to glow and gives the painting a translucence quality beyond what might be achieved by the light reflecting off the outer surface of the painting.

The workshop will consist of two parts. The first part will be an introduction to the principles of the technique with a demonstration of the materials involved and examples of the different stages a painting may go through. This will be followed by a practical session in which each of the participants will experiment on supplied small prepared boards.
While understanding the principles of this technique might take time, and applying this method is certainly time-consuming. It is a rewarding process when a painting is finally completed, however participants in the workshop should not expect to come out with a completed artwork!
