Each year, Muswellbrook Shire Council celebrates Australia Day by honouring local people who make a difference in our  community.

Australia Day Awards are presented to individuals and organisations who have made an outstanding contribution to Muswellbrook Shire in the field of community service, sport, agriculture, social inclusion, arts and culture, sustainability and education.

Citizen of the Year Award

  • The Citizen of the Year is awarded to a person(s) who has made a significant contribution and service to the community either as a result of a particular event or in performing a service over a number of years.
  • The Award recognises outstanding personal achievement in employment, academic, research, overcoming a disability by the nominee.

Youth Citizen of the Year Award

  • The Young Citizen of the Year is awarded to a person who has made a significant contribution and service to the community either as a result of a particular event or in performing a service over a number of years.
  • The Young Citizen of the Year nominees should be no more than 25 years of age at 1st January 2018.
  • Assessment of contribution and service to the community in relation to age of nominee.
  • Assessment of contribution to school activities in addition to community service.
  • An amount of $500 will be presented to the Young Citizen of the Year awardee.

Cultural Contributor Award

  • The Outstanding Contributor to Culture in Muswellbrook Shire is awarded to people who have made a significant contribution to the culture in Muswellbrook Shire either as a result of a particular event or in performing a service over a number of years.
  • Selection criteria:       
    • Level of involvement in the nominee's chosen sphere of the arts.
    • Impact that involvement would have had on others, i.e. would it have increased awareness or increased participation of others in that medium or the arts in general.
    • Whether the nominee has supported an organisation or events.
    • Whether the nominee has been an advocate for their art.

Sustainability Award

  • The Sustainability Award is awarded to individuals/organisations/companies who have made a significant contribution and service to the environment in the Muswellbrook Shire either as a result of a particular event or in performing a service over a number of years.

Education Award

  • The Education Award will be an award to a person(s) who has made a significant contribution to Education and Training in the community either as a result of a particular event or in performing a service over a number of years.

Northoak Award

This award was presented to Muswellbrook Shire Council by members of The Northoak Sports and Social Club to mark the closure of the OAK Factory on 30 June 1994. This award is to recognise Outstanding Achievements in Agriculture within the Shire of Muswellbrook. It is a Perpetual Trophy known as The Northoak Award to be presented each year on Australia Day.

  • For person or persons who have shown outstanding performance, have invented or shown innovative skill in any agricultural field.
  • Specifically for agriculture achievement or associated innovation towards agriculture – not manufacture.
  • There is no age limit.
  • A judging panel of three persons will select the Awardee each year.

Services to Sport Award

  • The nominee for Services to Sport award must be a resident of Muswellbrook Shire who has made a significant contribution to sport in any way.
  • Nominee must be an Australian citizen AND resident of Muswellbrook Shire.
  • The nominee shall reside in the Shire of Muswellbrook for at least 9 months of the year of nomination.

Social Inclusion Award

  • The Social Inclusion Award will be awarded to a person(s) who has made a significant contribution and service to social inclusion including disability, aged care or to fostering stronger relationships between communities within our Shire.

Sportsperson of the Year Award

  • Nominee must be an Australian citizen AND resident of Muswellbrook Shire.
  • The nominee shall reside in the Shire of Muswellbrook for at least 9 months of the year of nomination.
  • The Sportsperson of the Year should be aged more than 18 years as at 1st January of the relevant award year.

Junior Sportsperson of the Year Award

  • The Junior Sportsperson of the Year nominees should be no more than 18 years of age at the 1st January in the year of presentation.
  • Nominee must be an Australian citizen AND resident of Muswellbrook Shire.
  • The nominee shall reside in the Shire of Muswellbrook for at least 9 months of the year of nomination.
  • In considering nominations, the achievements of the nominee will be judged on the depth of competition and level of commitment/determination shown by nominee.
  • Nominations may be based on outstanding achievement(s) in a particular sport at either an international, national, state, regional or local level.  However, a person/teams dedication, commitment and service to their sport in the Muswellbrook community will be just as highly regarded.
  • A junior may only receive an award in one sporting category.  If they are selected for the Sportsperson of the Year, they are no longer eligible for the Junior Sportsperson Award and it will be awarded to another junior.
  • Where the Junior Sportsperson is eligible for the Sportsperson of the Year Award, no award will be given for the Junior Sportsperson of the year.
  • An amount of $500 will be awarded as part of the Junior Sportsperson of the Year Award. If there is more than one awardee, the amount of $500 will be divided between the winners.
