Disposing of irregular waste items

There are a few items that cannot be disposed of in one of your three domestic waste bins or during the annual bulky waste and garden organics kerbside collection that Muswellbrook Shire Council provides. This page lists these special items and offers a way you can dispose of them.

Asbestos

  • Asbestos must be triple wrapped in plastic
  • Can only be accepted for disposal of at Muswellbrook waste management facility
  • 24 hours notice must be given 
  • A burial fee is charged in addition to depot fees 
  • There is a limit on the total yearly amount allowed into the waste management facility

Builder's rubble

Builder's rubble may be disposed of at Muswellbrook waste management facility for a fee.

 

Car and truck batteries

Car and truck batteries may be disposed of at both waste management facilities.

 

Car bodies

Car bodies may be disposed of at Muswellbrook waste management facility for a fee.

 

Electronic waste (e-waste)

Televisions, computers, telephones and game consoles are able to be depositedin the e-waste container at Muswellbrook Waste Management Facility.

 

Fridges

You can dispose of your refrigerator at Muswellbrook Waste Management Facility. If degassed disposal is free. Refrigerators and freezers without a de-gassed certificate will attract a fee for disposal. Check the fee for gassed fridges here.

Gas cylinders and fire extinguishers

Gas cylinders and fire extinguishers MUST be de-gassed and de-valved by appropriate authorities.

They can then be disposed of at either waste management facility.

 

Mobile phones

Please deposit your mobile phone at a MobileMuster collection box. There is a collection box located in the foyer of Muswellbrook Shire Council's Administration Centre, located at 157 Maitland Street Muswellbrook.

 

Motor oils

Domestic quantities only may be disposed of at either waste management facility.

 

Paints and solvents

Paints and solvents CANNOT be accepted. 

Paint cans may be dried out by leaving in the sun with the lids off. 

When the paint cans have thoroughly dried they may be disposed of at either waste management facility.

Dispose of empty chemical containers through the drumMUSTER program. Visit the drumMUSTER website for information.

Both waste management facilities have trained drumMUSTER operators who can handle cleaned containers.

 

Scrap metal and white goods

  • Scrap metal and white goods may be disposed of at either waste management facility. Denman Transfer Station will only accept scrap metal and white goods from domestic sources.
  • Refrigerators and freezers without a de-gassed certificate will attract a fee. Check the fee for gassed fridges here. Soil and rocks

Soil and rocks may be disposed of at Muswellbrook waste management facility for a fee.  Large amounts will require pre-arrangement, contact the waste management facility during business hours.

 

Syringes

All sharps should be placed in a sharps container or a puncture resistant screw top plastic container.

If you do not feel comfortable picking up needles or syringes call the NSW Needle Clean Up Hotline on 1800 633 353.

Never put a needle or syringe, or a sharps container, in recycling bins, there would be a high risk of injury to workers.

Plastic syringes are not recyclable.

 

Televisions

Televisions can then be disposed of at either waste management facility.

Timber

Treated and untreated timber may be disposed of at Muswellbrook waste management facility only for a fee. Please separate treated from untreated timber.

 

Tyres

Domestic amounts may be disposed of at at either waste management facility for a fee.
